Gerald Wheaton - NOAA CA Regional Navigation Manager

NOAA California Regional Navigation Manager Gerald Wheaton- Jan 4, 2012

NOAA’s navigation managers, stationed strategically in port areas along U.S. coasts and Great Lakes, work directly with pilots, mariners, port authorities, and recreational boaters. They help identify navigational challenges facing the marine transportation system, and provide the resources and services that promote safe and efficient navigation.

Gearld Wheaton, Regional Navigation Manager for CA presented an overview of the NOAA Charting and Geodesy website www.noaa.gov/charts.html. Key resources hightlighted for Boating Safety use were PORTS Systems or obtaining wave and water height information; Nautical Charts that can be downloaded for viewing on a web browser; booklet charts which can be printed on 8 1/2 x 11 paper; Coast Pilot information; and Tides and Currents. The overview was well received and members agreed it was a great resource which should be encorporated into the Boating Safety Courses offered by the Flotilla. Members wishing to provide any recommendations for improvements to NOAA products, please contact Gerald Wheaton at gerry.wheaton@noaa.gov.

Fifth Annual VA Hospital Holiday Season Party- Dec 16, 2011

Of nineteen signups, fifteen District members participated in the 4th Annual VA Christmas Party. An additional fifteen USCG from Sector joined us, making a total of thirty serving these shut-in Veterans from WWll, Korea and Viet Nam. A good guess is that we served approximately 130 Vets, including a number of family members who also came to honor them. It now appears this has become an annual affair as the Vets look forward to our visit for months. Their Director, Dr. Elizabeth Sutherland and her staff, thanked us before the assembled group, then we served a first class lunch (provided by numerous top notch restaurants in San Francisco) and listened to astounding stories of bravery in the battlefield too numerous to share in an email. Much photographic documentation was collected digitally from Gail Giacomini and Rick Pisio, both recognized PA specialists. This final list, sent primarily to Robert Aston (SO-IS for Division), for 7030 purposes, shows most regular participants for the past four years. Special Kudos to Flotilla 14 for furnishing nearly 40% of the volunteers. In all aspects, the mission accomplished is an outreach program which hopefully will ignite other Divisions interest through National recognition and promotion. .

Flotilla 12 and Flotilla 14 Support USCG High Value Training, Oct 2011

Air Station San Francisco asked Auxiliary Vessel Sunrise to participate in a drill that would protect a High Valued Asset or HVA, such as a tanker or container ship in San Pablo Bay, with a helicopter Sunrise was to maintain course and speed while a fast approaching orange boat came on scene in a threatening manner. Dolphin Helo 6555 took action to warn off the aggressive intruder. When this tactic did not completely discourage the aggressive vessel, automatic machine gun fire (blanks) were used to thwart the attackers approach. This was repeated several times with different pilots during the morning and afternoon. These pictures were taken while the offending vessel was circling Sunrise at high speed and close range. The USCG helo was in an offensive posture using it's convincing fire power. On board Sunrise as crew were Dyane Mohr, Jerel Berkov, Bob Golden and Steven Bustin with Rae Kleinen as Coxswain.

Fleet Week 2010 - View From Deck of Sunrise

Fleet Week 2011 was filled with aerial acrobatics. Sunrise with Coxswain Rae Kleinen at the helm, had a front row seat each day as a tarp boat. The Blue Angels were roared through the blue sky with both grace and precision. The arrival of USS Carl Vinson through the solid fog bank was an impressive sight to see. The Navy ships that came in at the same time, with their crew at Parade Rest on deck, suddenly appeared under the Golden Gate Bridge. The pride of the United States Coast Guard Fleet, USCGC Bertholf, was on display for all to see in her white splendor. The Blue Angels and the Canadian Snow Birds were in the sky with a display of skill and daring that made the four day, an event to remember.
